T-Mobile myTouch 4G Phone Review

December 20th, 2010

The latest powerhouse Android phone, the T-Mobile myTouch 4G is the best smartphone experience of T-Mobile has to offer. A fast processor, HSPA + internet speeds, Wi-Fi calling, and the latest software to Android mean myTouch offers more power than the competition. And it is good looking to boot. Although some of the most important functions have rough edges, makes the existence of these features of our Editor’s Choice for T-Mobile smartphones without a physical keyboard.

The myTouch 4G feels, in a word, expensive. Relatively heavy at 5 ounces and measuring 4.8 to 2.44 from 0.43 cm (HWD) with a metal back and a little ceramized plastic bezel, it feels like it could be the comparatively thin Vibrant Samsung  powder in pounds. The phone comes in white, black, purple and red-I has been checked black. The myTouch used hard buttons instead of the touch key for the back, Menu and Home buttons, so they are easier in the dark or without looking, as the Vibrant’s keys. There is also a small touchpad below the attractive 800×480 LCD screen for navigation without the touch screen.

Phone lines and Internet access

The myTouch a good voice phone. Reception was average. The voice quality was very good, maybe a touch brassy, rather than rich in sound, but always clear and understandable. A little background noise came through the microphone, but my voice was loud and clear on the other side. The speakerphone is okay, it really is on the back of the phone, so it is especially loud when the phone around. Battery life was excellent to 8 hours, 5 minutes of talk time.

Thanks Dragon Dictation technology, the T-Mobile in the phone’s built, the myTouch has the best voice command system on each Android phone available. Not only can you do voice dialing over Bluetooth, you can even dictate the text messages! The dictation was not perfect, and you have to press a hardware button to send the message, but it is definitely usable, it is a big step beyond the usual postscript level voice dialing.

You can use the settings to “prefer Wi-Fi” or “dear cellular”, which is great, but started Wi-Fi calls are almost always with a bit of an audio breakdown and was pretty mangled when the signal was not absolutely terrific . A call to a local Starbucks made touch-and-go – definitely under cellular quality. Calls also come as soon as you move from one Wi-Fi network. While it’s great that T-Mobile offers the option, by the quality here is a step back from the BlackBerry 8520 and 9700.

The myTouch 4G will run the second phone line (after T-Mobile G2) on T-Mobile HSPA + network. Theoretically, HSPA + phones at speeds up to 14.4 Mbit s and runs T-Mobile HSPA + network runs up to 21 Mbit s if you never get these speeds in practice, in real life, the phones should speed down by up to 7 Mbps. I have a reliable 2 Mbps in Midtown Manhattan with the phone, but since I also have the same speed with a USB modem at about the same time the problem seemed to the network than the phone. The phone works on 3G and 2G networks overseas.

T-Mobile has offered no telephone in a long time with an official tethering option, and is myTouch both the first to start this new trend, and the very first to work as a wireless hotspot. I got off the phone with a PC and a wired modem and a Wi-Fi hotspot very light, always the same 2 Mbit s speed I saw on the phone. The myTouch has 802.11b /g /n Wi-Fi and GPS function on board, and both.

Software and Services

The myTouch 4G is the absolute latest version of Android, 2.2.1, on the brand new 1 Ghz processor Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8255 with many T-Mobile and HTC software adjustments. The second generation has Snapdragon sprang forward to the performance of Samsung’s Hummingbird, which was until now the fastest mobile processor on the U.S. market to adjust. Processor-based and adapted OpenGL graphics benchmarks or exceeded Hummingbird-based Android operating Samsung 2.2-Galaxy Tab.

Almost all of the benchmarks myTouch Vibrant beat the Samsung, but this could be because the Vibrant runs slower Android 2.1. In addition to the speed boost brings Android 2.2 Flash 10.1 to the browser and, well, it works somehow. It’s slow. Animations can be jerky. But you see the content, play it and interact with him. This is not a desktop-quality experience to be honest, even the Palm Pre 2 has better flash function, but it gets the job done.

Multimedia

Media support is excellent. MyTouch comes with 1 GB of memory on the card and an 8GB MicroSD card into a slot under the back cover, our 16GB SanDisk card has also worked. Which combines a myTouch Mediaroom application that a music player, video player, an FM radio and Slacker Radio. The music player displays album art and works with a wide range of unprotected formats, including AAC, MP3, WMA, OGG and WAV. The video player handles a wide range of codecs such as H.264 and DivX XviD, up to 720p resolution. Synchronizing your media like a PC or Mac, is the myTouch  with double twist software already on board: plug the phone into the computer with a USB cable and it is a drive shows the double twist installer .

The MobiTV-powered T-Mobile TV debut on the MyTouch and offers many great names, streaming TV channels  on a smooth, animated interface. You have ESPN, the Disney Channel and A-team got reps, not to love what? Video quality over 3G is soft and jagged, but shows looked sharp and smooth over a Wi-Fi network. If you prefer to see free videos, play the YouTube application in HD as well.

The myTouch has a 5 megapixel camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front, especially for video telephony. Two-way video telephony from Qik, which means you be able to make video calls to the Sprint Epic 4G  and the HTC EVO 4G phones, Samsung Galaxy Tab make, tablets , at least. I have to work not yet in a position to get Qik, they keep promising new, updated and corrected versions of the software.

You can use auto focus as long as you always take pictures of things at least four feet away. S video shoot Mode with up to 720p (1280×720) resolution. Outdoor videos looked smooth, but over-saturated, running at 29 frames per second. Indoor, low-light video in HD mode were smooth but jerky when I dropped the resolution to 640×480 to the ground.

Conclusions

There are three major Android smartphones from T-Mobile now, and you have reason to consider them all. Get the T-Mobile G2, if you have a physical keyboard, or if you’re a Google fan. Get the Samsung Vibrant, when the thinnest and lightest high-powered phone will be available. All others should opt for the T-Mobile for its 4G myTouch HSPA + internet speeds, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot mode and Android 2.2. The up-to-date software makes myTouch our current Editors’ Choice for T-Mobile smartphones without a physical keyboard.

T-Mobile Comet Phone Review

December 1st, 2010

In 2010, a telephone require a 4.3-inch display, a gigahertz (or higher) processor, and a one-bazillion megapixel camera with xenon flash and auto focus continuous may be relevant? How would it be important? Or even – dare we say it – genius? Is that even possible? At a glance, T-Mobile’s Comet from Huawei an entirely forgettable phone, just another anonymous Ultra-low-end handset that does not work, impress anyone (except maybe your tax advisor). In fact, it is within shouting distance of the free. It runs stock Android 2.2. A regional variation of Huawei Ideos, it was developed with the help of Google. Oh, and yes, it is one of the first T-Mobile devices to Wi-Fi hotspot support available.

Hardware

It would be misleading to say that the Comet has a premium appearance, but in the same breath, calling it “cheap looking” would probably do it a disservice. It looks like Huawei generally everything in order to use ultra-low-cost materials and make them look (and feel) high-end starting with a matte black plastic on the back and the front panel with small strips of soft-touch material done in trimmed added in between . The company limited its gracious use of chrome on the D-pad of the ring and the volume rocker, and the plate around the D-Pad has concentric ribs to produce a nice visual effect. We can definitely picture of the Comet looks great in a variety of colors (in fact highlighted a number of Huawei Ideos colors on the IFA), but for now, black is the only option.

T Mobile Comet right for print T Mobile Comet Phone Review

About 104 x 56 x 13mm, make no mistake, that the comet is a very small phone – as well it should, given the small 2.8-inch screen. After most of the past few years carrying phones with 3.5 inch or greater, there is something refreshing about dealing with such a thin phone and know that it’s more than a dumbphone – realistic, in fact, it has 85 or 90 percent of the capacity and functionality of high-end devices on the market today, if you think about it. It is not particularly thin, but the thickness feels appropriate for the size – not chubby in the least.

As for ports and controls are simple: Micro-USB in the middle of the soil, 3.5 mm headphone jack and power button up top, and the aforementioned volume rocker is on the left. The power switch is flush with a little too small, making it difficult to say if you pushed it once … but that is a button, we would much prefer to push too hard to be too easy. On the back you have the 3.2-megapixel camera next two holes, which was seen as a dual-LED flash, but they are actually for the kit – there is no flash in this case.

Moving back to the front, you get the usual four buttons Android as touch-sensitive icons below the capacitive display, and below, vertically oriented send and end keys on either side of the circular D-pad. This area of the phone is really the only part that we take specific question: at a glance, it seems wasteful. As we mentioned before, the concentric ring design is kinda cool, but it does not serve any function so that you end up with this relatively large area of dead space that could have either used more screen real estate or completely destroyed to make the phone smaller.

In fact, we suspect Huawei was backed into a corner on this one – what the display would be larger have higher costs, and there are probably electronic guts behind this area, which could not easily have anywhere else without the phone moving thicker or more expensive (or without the battery life). And we do not want to blow out of proportion, either – it looks really good, it’s just a style element that would not simply exist on a more expensive device. Heck, most Android phones do not have physical send and end buttons at all, although there are quite nice, one-touch access to the phone application.

On a related note, that the huge circular D-pad, and its design is a bit confusing at some levels. First of all, the recent trend towards optical pads – especially on Android devices – you immediately assume that the large black area in the center of an optical Pad … but it is not. Rather, it is just a simple push button to choose from. Second, the raised chrome edge is a little thin and sweet, making it a little to push harder than it should be likely. Then again, if this huge space under the screen really in this price range required (see previous section), go with something like a trackball would be looked silly had, so this is probably another case of Huawei do the best it could with the hand had been treated there. And we are seriously fussy, anyway – you never have to use the D-Pad in Android, and if you choose, you can use this very well.

The display is definitely the weakest link in the Comet Arsenal – and that shows one of the most expensive components on any mobile phone’s bill, which comes as little surprise are. It is a 2.8-inch QVGA TFT screen that can suck a kind of trifecta is received: it is smaller, lower resolution and less contrast than today’s Android trendsetter. But they can get the job done? The actual display is (we would say of 1 mm or so) far enough below the capacitive layer that angles type are irrelevant because, as you tilt it, ending the display to darken and by reflection at this layer is not affected by any negative LCD effects.

t mobile comet T Mobile Comet Phone Review

The good news is that, as already mentioned, the screen is capacitive, and it pays off: we had no problems with sensitivity, it felt good, and we were of what an easy time for us with the On-screen keyboards had (more surprised about that later). Strangely, it does not seem to support multi-touch at all – even though then again, is on a screen this small, the usefulness of it is questionable. We did not really miss.

Above the display you will find the headphones (of course) from a proximity sensor to the left and a notification ambient light on the right side, which can be configured in the default Android species. The sensor is pretty funny – it works quite well as far as we can tell, but it is very clear red flashes every half second or so if you need in an area without much light. Interestingly, we were not able to get the display to check out hanging up, we had our hands on hold pretty much the entire face of the phone. Magic!

Looking at the meek processor and small screen, we expected that the battery always run on the Comet, but it was nothing spectacular – perhaps due to the fact that the battery is a relatively easy 1200mAh. Then again, it was far from terrible: we have selected about 24 hours of relatively light use, including one hour with the hotspot. With heavy use, we think it would be easy by a day, but you must be sure it the price.

Camera

It is a fixed-focus 3.2 megapixel camera, so we do not expect much – and we did not get much. The pictures are not half bad – especially when scaled up to sizes suitable for computer screens – but the video capture was absolutely horrible. There are CIF video (352 x 288) at a low frame rate with pretty horrible audio … and, well, frankly, there is almost nothing positive to say. It feels almost like Huawei has designed a sensor for still images and hacked to do video. In fact, that probably what they were doing.

Software

The comet is bearing Android 2.2 – a side effect of the Huawei partnership with Google on the phone, we are safe as evidenced by the large “Google” logo down right places at the back of the camera. That is, there are a few pack-in apps – nothing controversial, and nothing we have not seen before: the view-only version of Documents To Go from T-Mobile My Account and My Device applications, Swype, TeleNav, and an overall “Notepad” app are all in ROM. We use “notepad” in quotes because that’s how it is actually written, and the poor capitalization is a kind of indicator for the whole app – sloppy with virtually no functionality. We suspect Huawei wrote this himself and threw it in as a stopgap to make Android the lack of a standard notes application, but we would preferred that they just let us download one of the many free (and good) or those of us who have You can include T-Mobile partners with a developer to a decent.

We will not lie: the phone can be painfully slow. This is obviously due to the fact 528MHz processor, Huawei included – in part as Battery Saver, we are safe, but more as a cost saving. We have never been to the point where we were ready to throw the phone against the wall, though – the speed was bearable, especially (and important) in the browser, where scrolling seemed basically keep up with our demands.

t mobile comet android T Mobile Comet Phone Review

We mentioned the software keyboard just before, and on such a small screen, can you imagine the input was of concern. We were surprised – no, shocked – how little trouble we had typed in the keyboard market with our fat fingers, and frankly, we can not fully explain. It was not even half that Android’s word recognition system, we were just nailing the right letters generally consistent. Swype there too, if you’re into that sort of thing, and it seems just as good here as work on other Android device we’ve tested recently (that is, in fact, quite good).

An odd misstep comes when you connect the Comet to your computer. The phone is initially on your computer as a CD labeled “Mobile Partner”, a branding opportunity on the Ideos seems that T-Mobile to have missed a total for the Comet. Opening the CD reveals a PDF with some exclusions for BusyBox GPL, among other things, together with an offer from Huawei on a CD of all GPL source code in the Comet awards for 20. This is not even the strangest bit when – had the honor to the phone folder “Drivers” contains both ADB to go out and – get this – a link to Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 for Windows 2000 and XP to download.

You know, the software you use to connect your Windows Mobile device to your computer. Do not ask us. Of course this is not the first time that we really obvious and avoidable software to see madness in a T-Mobile device, we think this probably is the fact that T-Mobile one of the less rigorous equipment testing regimes of the industrial sector – we can not verify that claim, but it seems so.

With full 3G signal strength, the connection was spotty at best, we regularly invite to failing to web pages and streaming media was a non-starter. It could have been a single case – and it is also important to note that T-Mobile still officially carry out his plan tethering anyway, so we have to get to it if it is completely official. T-Mobile G2 with Google Android Phone Review

November 9th, 2010

Is it really started only two years after the initial G1 phone from T-Mobile’s network, starting Google’s entry into the smartphone race?  Like its predecessor, the HTC-built G2 a full, QWERTY keyboard, but also brings the rest of the hardware up to par, or better, than most of the Android devices of today. The super-LCD is suitable for the sunlight, the phone runs Android 2.2, the camera supports high-definition video recording, and the handset, T-Mobile HSPA + use fast network for high speed mobile broadband services. Unlike many competing Android phones using the Android G2, a standard interface, the plus and minus. The native interface of Android 2.2 is quite usable, and lack of adjustment could mean future operating system upgrades appear more quickly.

However, enjoy some smartphone owners like myself modification with custom ROMs and interfaces as their Sense HTC Android interface. For now, this is not an option on the G2, as hardware, the original settings, if the phone has rooted. For most, however, the stock Android interface and seven sufficient home screens on the more than G2.

Photo software.

Although generally considered a “stock” interface, T-Mobile decided many pre-installed Google applications on the G2. Goggles, Finance, hearing, Sky and several other applications come with the device and can not be removed. It is a minor problem because the device does the 4 GB internal memory is still much room for the application, and links to these applications can be removed from the home screen.

Google Voice is also pre-installed and runs as one of the most important of Android is not necessarily a bad thing. In addition, Google Voice configuration of the device would initially installed, something I like in the future Android devices to see included. Given the relative non-customized approach of G2, there is nothing terribly new in terms of software or user interface. However, the fact that ships with G2 Froyo is a potential advantage over older devices that can wait for the latest update of Android. Viewed from a hardware perspective, the G2 several stand-out features: high-definition video recording with the 5 megapixel camera, a new Qualcomm processor, support for T-upgrade 3G mobile network and a unique sliding mechanism that a full hardware keyboard is disclosed.

Not a perfect picture.

Still pictures with the G2 are acceptable but not brilliant. The software supports auto-focus camera and a few basic user configurable settings, but offers no advanced options. Occasionally, I had several shots with the G2, because the white balance has been distorted to take by bright light. There is no way to tap the screen and support the camera in such a situation. The 720p video recording is good but not up to par with what I have seen on other devices currently available. The inclusion of a dedicated camera button is nice, however, and the camera software to start.

Peppy performance.

Although the CPU is designed at 800 MHz, the G2 results at least as good as my Nexus One, which uses a 1 GHz CPU Snapdragon. This is probably due to an improved graphics chip in the G2 and the next generation CPU. The G2 offers a fluid experience with little to no lag, even when multiple applications are running simultaneously. My view is that Qualcomm offers a good trade-off with this new CPU, it is as fast as the original Snapdragon can help in the battery life department. In fact, I found that the G2 has its mAh removable battery for more than my 1300 Nexus One handset without sacrificing performance.

Voice and data: clearly and quickly.

Speaking of performance, the G2 Radio package features. Voice quality and signal strength is solid and if you use the G2 HSPA + in a coverage area, you get a nice bonus in the form of faster mobile broadband services. I traveled only within the confines of a HSPA + area near my apartment and ran several speed tests. In a best-case scenario offered the G2 a download speed of 6.4 MBit s, upload speed of 1.3 Mbit s and latency of 96 milliseconds. T-Mobile tells me that I went deeper into the detection zone was faster, I would probably have seen downloads in the 7-9 Mbps range. These figures compare with WiMAX speeds and the expected performance of the coming-soon-LTE network of Verizon. Note that there are no additional fees for such speeds from T-Mobile network. Unfortunately, T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot Froyo function from the G2 removed so that the device is not currently used to exchange data with other devices.

While the original G1 keyboard was missing, the G2 makes it in a big way. The buttons are good, big enough for most fingers, illuminated as required and to operate a pleasure. In addition to the standard QWERTY layout, the G2-keys for the menu, search, and a special added. “Com/. Www” button to help with Web addresses. Three quick keys are also in the bottom line that can open to an individual APP. When using the hardware keyboard, the G2 automatically rotates the display to landscape mode, and that includes the home screen. I even found that to use with just one week, I can type faster with the hardware keyboard in landscape mode as the software input method in the portrait. have a look at them in the video above overview, the sliding mechanism for the keyboard, the best I’ve seen. Despite Android 1.6 to insert, it really is an excellent device. Would my Motorola Droid this? I doubt it, if for no other reason than the limited range of T-Mobile in my area. I love the market coverage, as this is a major problem where I live, this is the first device I with honest reporting seen in my area have. This alone could tip me on it. But in the end, I do not think I would give up voice entry for e-mail and SMS, I use this feature many times a day. So I guess my recommendation depends on the importance of integrated navigation system or traffic fringes are covering for you, things like voice-versus-entry text boxes and guarantees of about compatibility. Only you can decide, know that Garmin has a very hard line here hoe. I understand their reluctance to get into the App game, but I would be a Garmin-Asus phone much more quickly if the navigation interface were like an app, rather than buy a custom interface set.
