The portable music player is the must-own gadget of the 21st century, arguably rival the mobile phone with its enormous popularity. It therefore stands to reason that so many vendors attempt to combine the two, with a legion of music-centric handsets to create space in the market.
The Nokia 5610 XpressMusic is a relatively affordable entry into this crowded subgenre, with enough interesting features to appeal to most types of users. Although it is certainly not the best mobile phone of its kind (a distinction held by Sony Ericsson’s Walkman line), it remains a capable performer nonetheless.
The 5610 shares much in common with the previous music phone from Nokia, the 5310. Both units sport the same basic interface and MP3 player, but the 5610 is decked with an array of extras. These include 3G coverage (the 5310 was GSM only), a 3.2-megapixel camera, a video player and recorder, plus a new sliding form factor (replacing the previous model candy bar form). There is no doubt that the superior product, but of course, all those extra bells and whistles come at a higher price.

The 5610 is a beautifully constructed device, with wide, plastic keys protected by a solid slider. Although build quality is usually fixed, we were disappointed with the removable back panel, which is shockingly thin and difficult to slot back into place. While we were obviously unable to test the durability, it looks like something that can easily be bent out of shape or broken in two. Harsh individuals will therefore need to take a little finesse when inserting their battery or SIM card.
Is aimed squarely at music lovers, the Nokia 5610 lives or dies based on the strength of its MP3 player. Fortunately, the interface is both versatile and easy to use, with a dedicated slider button to launch the player. Settings include shuffle and repeat play modes, stereo widening, preset and customizable equalizer settings, and up to 22 hours music playback.
MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC +, eAAC +, AMR-NB and WMA file formats are supported. The 5610 is equipped with a 2.5 mm headphone jack, with a 3.5 mm jack adapter included in the package. As expected, the built-in speaker is a bit on the tinny side for playing music, although it does not blow out a respectable amount of noise, so your fellow commuters furious public transport.

It is sometimes easily overlooked in today’s day and age, but the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic is also seen as a mobile phone (this is its primary purpose after all). We found call quality more than adequate, while the volume levels are loud enough to hold conversations in noisy environments. The handsfree speakerphone also works well. All up, a solid effort.
The integrated 3.2-megapixel camera has a respectable job of taking happy snaps, but the results are far from excellent. The flash works reasonably well for night-time photography, while the camera also doubles as a video recorder, with a maximum resolution of 480×320 pixels. While a little overly reflective for our tastes, the 2.2in screen has a fair job of showing your range of media, most vivid and sharp images.
The Nokia 5610 comes with 20MB onboard memory and a microSD slot for an extra boost of up to 4GB memory. Other goodies include a WAP browser, Bluetooth functionality, a speakerphone and voice recorder, an FM radio, plus the standard suite of PIM functions (consisting of an alarm, calendar, contacts list, calculator and clock). Nokia 5610 XpressMusic rate of up to six hours talk time on standard GSM networks and 13 days standby time. This is a reasonable outcome, you have to see charging your phone every few days.
