BlackBerry Pearl 8110 Phone Review

February 11th, 2011

The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 swaps the Wi-Fi for GPS in comparison with the Pearl 8120 we reviewed back in November 2007. But should you choose GPS over Wi-Fi? We know. We bring you the familiar compact design and ease of the “pearl” for navigation of the device, and in a rainbow of colors, the Pearl 8110 is good at the consumer end of BlackBerry.

In terms of design, the AOT 8110 mirrors the 8120 so we have won, repeat all of the stats here, but covers the juicy bits. Besides the Pearl itself, the interaction is mainly based around the 20-SureType keyboard, a doubling of letters in a QWERTY layout. It may seem bewildering at first, but it’s actually very easy to use given a little practice.

There is a dedicated button for camera, volume, mute and voice dialing, perhaps reflecting the business side of the phone. You can customize buttons, so the voice-dialing keyboard lock which is a more sensible option, and maybe the camera in exchange for your primary e-mail inbox. You, Äôll also a microSD card slot on the side.

BlackBerrys are known for setting up email in your pocket and this is a breeze to set up, even for multiple accounts. The keyboard will allow you to sensibly answer these e-mails without the hassle that other mobile phone solutions to present. If you are an intensive emailler, then the company may aos other devices more to your liking with larger keys, but we thought this was a good compromise, while still small enough to fit in a pocket.

The BlackBerry Desktop Manager makes it easy to synchronize your contacts with your PC from which there is a seamless integration into the normal functions of the phone calls, SMS, etc, and email. Cautious as someone more than a number or e-mail asks you what you want. The contacts also integrate into the unique feature of the 8110, the GPS.

It makes AOT GPS shout like you, Aod might expect and it is almost possible to overlook the fact that the GPS at all. Hidden under the Maps option in the menu, you can jump into the world of GPS navigation. You can set route and a visual step-by-step instructions on the screen. A useful feature is the “Where am I” option to find yourself and then you can send this card to other people.

Ok, it’s not as comprehensive as a dedicated system and you would want to use AOT in-car navigation, but to meet friends in a pub, or get that interview, it works pretty well. As a tool for someone to walk around a city, it’s pretty good. To get the most out of your BlackBerry you need GPRS data costs and the plan that your provider will give you, and the functions they support considering.

If you expect Aod, you get all the usual multimedia functions you expect from a phone, the ability to shoot video and watch a decent music player and 3.5 mm jack for headphones.

BlackBerry Tour 9630 Review

February 4th, 2011

Targeting the business professional is always to go, whether on the ocean or the city, Canada-based Research In Motion released the first global 3G BlackBerry in the wild. Parts of the design features of Bold and Storm last year, the Tour marries familiar with all BlackBerry devices the best Verizon data rates we’ve seen.

BlackBerry devices scream professionalism from every corner, and the Tour is no different, but the growing number of quality, and often free entertainment apps in addition to productivity apps such as Word to Go, go to Excel, and PowerPoint to Go, make this The perfect phone for both the busy professional and Internet radio junkie both.

blackberry tour 9630 1 BlackBerry Tour 9630 Review

Design

The first thing you notice about this phone is that it looks much like the Curve and the Bold together in one neat package. The Tour comes with a shell almost identical to the Bold, but with a more natural look. Measuring (W x D x H) 2.4 x 0.6 x 4.4 in, this phone is just the right size to take on the road. The BlackBerry Futures Tour a dull chrome line, which is slightly better than a silver one, for obvious sunlight reflection topics. The battery cover sports a carbon fiber-like that can be easily removed and replaced with a 3rd party cover if you do not want one it comes with.

Another design would have me just the keyboard. If you chose your new phones on the keyboard design alone, then go out and buy it. The Tour has the best and most efficient keyboard that I found on any phone. The keys are nicely laid out, well spaced, and have a really good feel and grip on them. So you slip your fingers and a landing on another.

Neatly in the top center of the Tour is a high resolution 480 x 360 screen. It’s perfect for reading emails, surfing the Internet, viewing photos or watching movies. I give them props for upgrading the screens that they BlackBerry phones. Gone are the days that services like mobile TV were unusable because the phones could not handle. The screen has provided a bit annoying black border around it, why do not they just expand the screen size is beyond me.

Located on the upper right side of the phone is a standard size 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is always good to have, so you dont have to go and buy a special headset adapters. The camera, what can I say about the camera? It is a 3.2 megapixel, nothing really special, but in any case, both pictures and videos and beats of the resolution on the iPhone with 0.2 pixels. The phone is the microSD love, and you’ll find it under the battry. This is our main objection to the design of the Tour as it makes swapping memory on the phone boring. All in all I give the BlackBerry Tour became a 8 / 10 for design. You might say why not a 9 / 10 the reason is the many features this phone comes with WiFi capability is not one of them.

Performance

The BlackBerry Tour is a revolution in the CDMA market. Yes, many of the features on the new software are not new BlackBerrys for GSM, CDMA BlackBerrys, but it’s a step in the right direction. For one of the BlackBerry Messenger is now a little easier to use than previous versions. And the software comes with applications for MSN Messenger, Yahoo and Google.

Reception for this phone is great as expected, no problems in that area. It also comes with world phone capabilities so it can work on GSM, CDMA, EDGE, etc. take this baby anywhere in the world and you’ll never have to say can you hear me now? You’ll be pop a SIM card in the back when traveling abroad is. Battery life is what you would expect from a smart phone, approximately 5 hours talk time and 14 days standby time. So business is not a problem for the Tour and certainly beats that of phones like the iPhone and better yet the Pre.

A visual voicemail app. is included in the Tour, but as with many things from mobile phone companies must pay a monthly access for the service. If you really hate checking your voicemail the regular way, then by all means go for it. Me, I’m going to stick to my normal caveman way of calling the numbers. The Tour is Bluetooth 2.0 capable. Profile (PBAP) and Serial Port Profile support. Bluetooth stereo audio (A2DP/AVCRP), DUN.

Conclusion

When it comes to choosing the right smart phone we always forced to a compromise between productivity, size, networks, etc. But the BlackBerry 9630 Tour is offering a number of features is hard to beat. While we quibble at its lack of WiFi and better placed memory card slot, which are small compared to the benefits that entails. GSM Blackberry’s have always been ahead in terms of features, but with the Tour, Blackberry has finally decided to take their game in the CDMA arena. And if there is one thing to be said, the Tour is the global thing in impressive style.

BlackBerry Storm 9530 Phone Review

February 2nd, 2011

After six months, the BlackBerry Storm eventually live up to the possibilities. Major updates to the handheld and desktop software have fixed the Storm most frustrating bugs and filled in many gaps, making this a phone we can finally recommend. But it is almost too late for unusual click-screen phone from RIM, the BlackBerry Storm 2 will come down the pike within a few months.

blackberry storm 9530 3 BlackBerry Storm 9530 Phone Review

If you are holding off on buying a phone from the Storm by massive bugs and bad media sync, you can now go pick up with more confidence. RIM has fixed those problems and added the World App store for a solid third party app experience. If your company off because you do not like the Storm’s unique and unusual touch-screen then, well, I can not help you there.

The decidedly sexy 5.5-ounce Storm is a 4.4-by-2.4-by-0.5-inch (HWD) slab is dominated by a 3.3-inch, 360 x 480-pixel touch screen, which is capacitive, which means that detects the electricity in your fingers, and transflective, so it’s easy to see outdoors in bright light.

Below the display are Pick Up and End buttons, a Back button, and the familiar BlackBerry menu key. On the sides of the handset, you will find camera, volume, and a programmable multifunction button. Mute and lock buttons are on the top panel. The phone’s metal back is home to the speaker and camera.

Every few years, what changes we think RIM smartphone keyboards. The hybrid SureType keyboard introduced on the BlackBerry 7130e seemed wacky at the moment, but now the BlackBerry Pearl is a mainstream bestseller. RIM has radically changed the game again with the Storm on the screen, you click by pressing down.

But a whole new way of clicks create an entirely new interface, and the learning curve on this thing is a cliff. It’s like trying to turn a one-button mouse to move a two-button one. We are conditioned by numerous single-touch screen devices, tap, double-tap, and smudges on things. With Storm, you single-tap, double-tap, sweep, and then, and until you get used to it, the experience frustrating.

The new 0148 software upgrade makes the Storm QWERTY keyboard much more precisely now, when you click on the letters, you get what you think you clicked. I was able to type much faster on the updated Storm on an older model with the 0.75 software.

RIM redesigned the whole BlackBerry UI around the touch screen. As a result, there are bigger icons, of course, and a quartet of virtual keyboards (QWERTY portrait, landscape QWERTY, SureType, and phone keypad) to the popular BlackBerry physical keyboard replacement. You navigate from the Storm’s interface by moving your fingertip across the screen. If you want to select, click the down screen. Pressing the physical BlackBerry logo key below the screen summons the familiar BlackBerry contextual menu and select the options with your finger.

I found the interface of the 528-MHz device quickly feel. The new 0148 software update edad major bugs causing crashes, bugs and random application is started. And RIM’s BlackBerry App World App Store, launched in March, makes Storm owners can see and third party software that is fully compatible with their phone.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 T-Mobile Phone Review

January 18th, 2011

The Blackberry Bold 9780 is the first BlackBerry handset to use 6. The latest update to RIM’s operating system is further away from the rigid and static from old OS, something more liquid in a market where Apple and Android 2.2 IOS are winning fans. With the exception of a dark ring around the edge of the device looks almost identical to the previous Bold and that’s about it. Although a phone as individual as the Bold, RIM had never moving too far from its formula.

blackberry bold 9780 03 BlackBerry Bold 9780 T Mobile Phone Review

The Bold has no touchscreen, so you can navigate using the square touch sensitive trackpad. Once you get used to it, scroll up and down web pages is quite fast, but if you are from a touchscreen at first it is hard not to jab the screen, while regular Bold users will not have this problem.

Build quality is solid and reassuring, with dedicated volume buttons on the side. One thing that we aren’ta big fan of the position of the voice-activation button on the side, despite the use of the handset for a few weeks, we accidentally pressed on a daily basis.

E-mail and social networking

The highlight of the Blackberry Bold is always the keyboard, it is unchanged here. Typing is a breeze, the keys have plenty of travel, so you’ll easily typing messages. Although people with larger fingers (like us) may find this a little tight, we prefer the larger keyboard of the HTC Z Desire, but its compact size makes it more friendly bag.

In line with the main strength of RIM, the Bold 9780 is a very friendly e-mail. 10 You can synchronize e-mail accounts at once or through a web mail account such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail, besides business Enterprise Accounts. This is done through the Setup menu, which uses simple step-by-step instructions to you via email, instant messaging and social network set up (with WiFi and Bluetooth).

All messages arrive at a unified inbox, or you can choose individual accounts, you can move a folder to your home screen are less cluttered. Social feeds you all Facebook, Twitter, AIM, BlackBerry Messenger and Google Talk accounts.

Choose to review the information in a list or filter by individual accounts. Click through for each individual account access where you can write messages, view contacts, etc. It works very well and makes it very easy to use, our only gripe is that scrolling through lists of messages takes a while due to the size of the screen.

Multimedia

To be honest, nobody buys a really exciting for its video playback capability. The screen is definitely a bit on the small size and 480×360 resolution means the videos are quite clear and sharp, rather than excellent, but it is nice for the odd YouTube video. There is no Flash support though.

The Bold 9780 captures video at a speed of 640×480 and you can upload images directly to YouTube. The camera has been boosted from 3.2 to 5 megapixels, the shutter is a bit slow, but photos are sufficient and it is very easy to upload them to Twitter and Facebook with a few clicks.

A boost in storage 512MB 256MB is welcome, but of course it is expandable with MicroSD cards. Audio playback is pretty good, we managed to get a decent amount of volume of our tracks and a single 3.5 mm jack means you can use your own headphones.

Conclusion

With its full QWERTY keyboard and a strong email support, the Bold 9780 is much more a phone for messaging – to send texts and emails. At its end it is still probably the best handsets on the market.

BlackBerry Style Sprint Phone Review

November 19th, 2010

The BlackBerry RIM Style labels of a second per handset with BlackBerry OS 6 ships (the first was the BlackBerry Torch), and it is also the first BlackBerry, both a clamshell design and a full QWERTY keyboard feature. RIM ago with a flip design, but only with the Pearl Flip, the more compact SureType keyboard had experimented. RIM hopes that the Style’s full keyboard to move to quick-messaging fans, and imply the presence of OS 6 and an expanded feature set, it could be too power-hungry users and appeal. We were pleasantly surprised at how well OS 6 uses a non-touch-screen BlackBerry like the Style surprises, and we think its practical implementation will appeal a wide range of consumers.

Design

The RIM BlackBerry Style, the first BlackBerry clamshell both a chassis and a full QWERTY keyboard to connect. This design is often a simple messaging phones like the LG Lotus Elite and Motorola Rambler, what does RIM aims to Style on entry-level smartphone user could. In fact, Sprint said the flip-phone design is incredibly popular with his customers, perhaps because they accidentally presses reduced or because you can end a call just by closing the phone. Whatever might be the case, we applaud RIM for this new design, since it enough to BlackBerry fans happy while drawing in potential new customers.

blackberry style sprint gray open sm BlackBerry Style Sprint Phone Review

With the full keyboard, the BlackBerry Style has of a place in the form of looking forward. Measuring 3.78 inches long and 2.36 inches wide and 0.73 inches thick, the Style a little wider than most flip phones, but the width is about the same as most chocolate bars BlackBerrys, so there was no problem for us. It has rounded corners, curved sides and a smooth back is that the Style is a sense of luxury in your hand. At 4.62 ounces, the Style has a nice weight if held. On the front of Style is a 2-inch color LCD display with 240×320 pixels in a very bright external facade is framed. In fact, we had a hard time seeing the screen in bright sunlight because of glare. By default, it shows the date, time, battery life, signal strength and information.

You can also set it so that incoming caller ID, show a short preview for incoming text message or e-mail, and you can scroll the volume key down the list, if you want. You can also use the current title, if you run the music player. On the left spine of Style is the micro USB charging port, a 3.5mm headset jack and a microSD card slot. However, the cover is closed so tightly that you remove the battery cover to pry it need to open. The volume rocker on the right side and a “Convenience Key” that you can use the map on the phone functions. On the back is the lens of the camera and an LED flash.

The Style has a solid hinge that opens and closes the phone securely. If you flip it open, you will find a very attractive 2.7-inch display. Although it only displays 65,000 colors, high resolution – 360×400 pixels – more than makes up for it. Images look sharp and bright, and we had no problems reading text or viewing Web pages. The quality of the display is comparable to that of other BlackBerry handsets we’ve seen how the BlackBerry Curve 3G. You can change the size, style, and font family of the phone, brightness, backlight timer, the timer and the display screen is dark matter.

Also like the Curve 3G has the Style of a shallow navigation array with the raised optical trackpad in the middle. The array contains the send and end power keys, press the back button, and the main menu. As with other BlackBerry handsets, hold down the menu button will open a task manager. The Style, the first OS 6 we’ve seen without a touch screen, so different from the torch, you need to use the optical trackpad for most of the navigation. We were skeptical that the new interface would translate well to the trackpad, and were pleasantly surprised when it did. The trackpad is smooth and intuitive enough that we simply navigating through menus and lists without too many hiccups. Our only complaint is that the trackpad is not nearly as fast as with a touch screen, but that’s not something that bothered us too much.

blackberry style 9670 BlackBerry Style Sprint Phone Review

The keyboard on the Style is very similar to the torch. It is very thin and relatively flat on the surface so that the keys do not feel so light on the type, we found ourselves in some slow down when entering a message, for example. The keyboard is tilted and slanted as that of the Bold, but we could not text, and choose to feel. It is quite spacious, with plenty of space above and below the keyboard for your thumbs to rest. RIM also sent the phone, so it does not feel top-heavy when your hands are laid out on the keyboard.

User Interface and Software

The RIM BlackBerry Style, the second model to ship with BlackBerry OS 6, which is a fundamental revision of the platform. BlackBerry fans will see many details known, of course, but there are enough differences for us to sit and take notice. The first thing you will find that the home screen, completely revised. You get a fast access area at the top, you followed bar on the basic status of the phone (date, time, wireless connections, and so on), by a notification for missed calls or messages, and a new navigation bar that presents different screens for five different categories of applications and content: All, Favorites, Media, Downloads, and often. Navigate between different screens is felt when a touch screen faster and more intuitive, the trackpad was easy to use, as I said, but we felt like a bit closer to him.

Our favorite addition is the new interface to Universal Search. Everything you need to do is start typing, and the search function will immediately begin scanning your phone for relevant keywords. You can also expand your search to Google, YouTube, BlackBerry App World, and third-party applications. This is a feature long overdue for BlackBerry, and we are glad it finally arrive.

Features

The RIM BlackBerry Style is a Sprint exclusive at launch, with support for dual-band CDMA and EV-DO Rev A networks. Key features include Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, GPS, speakerphone, voice dialing, conference calling, speed dial, visual voicemail and SMS and MMS. With multimedia messaging, you can combine conversations in a threaded conversation view, and the messages are collected in an in-box so you can easily sort through them. You can instantly connect with BlackBerry Messenger, in conjunction with other IM services like Google Talk and AIM.

As with all BlackBerry devices, the Style of e-mail has on it. It syncs with a number of different corporate cultures options, ranging from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange. It supports also synchronize BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express, a free service, calendar, and contacts for individuals and small businesses. You can also use your personal e-mail – up to 10 accounts in fact – either individually or combined in-boxes. Since RIM is aimed at the Style consumers and the business professional, but also quick access social network integrated into the phone. It comes with Facebook, MySpace and Twitter applications, as well as a dedicated online feed app that all these networks into an integrated pre-installed. The online feed app also has an RSS news aggregator. Other applications that are using the phone DataViz Documents To Go, a notepad, a calculator, YouTube, Sprint Zone, Sprint Navigation, password management, BrickBreaker, Word Mole. You can download additional applications and games from the BlackBerry App World 2.0.

Surf the Internet and multimedia

BlackBerry OS 6 brings a whole new web browsing experience courtesy of a new WebKit-based browser. It looks clean and fresh, and we really like the introduction of tabbed browsing. It is simple, a website add to the home screen as a shortcut, and you can also share and copy URLs. As we noted in the torch review, RIM claims that the WebKit browser has HTML and JavaScript rendering, which result not zippier page load improved. Unfortunately, there are at least not yet no Flash support.

Another big improvement with OS 6 is a stronger multimedia offering with Cover Flow-like presentations in the music player. It supports MP3, AAC, AAC +, eAAC +, WMA, FLAC, OGG and music file formats. As for video formats it supports MPEG4, H.263, H.264 and WMV codecs. You can use the video player for playing the actual size to full screen. To media on the phone, just load it on a microSD card or connect it to the computer with a USB cable. RIM has a new BlackBerry Desktop Software 6 can synchronize your media libraries offered by Windows Media Player or iTunes. There is also a Wi-Fi Music Sync function that you sync music over Wi-Fi can. The BlackBerry Style comes with 512 MB onboard memory, and it is installed with an 8 GB microSD card already. The phone can store up to 32GB cards when the 8 GB proves too restrictive for you. The Style has include a 5 megapixel camera with continuous autofocus, image stabilization and 11 Operation modes that face detection and panorama mode. We were glad that RIM has taken all these settings in the camera, and we felt good for the most part. However, the resulting image quality was not as good as we hoped. Interior saw were not a little dark and overcast, and the images as sharp as we like. It also may have to record a video camera with VGA video.

Performance

We tested the RIM BlackBerry Style in San Francisco with Sprint service and the quality was generally very good. We heard our callers loud and clear without any static or hiss, and we thought their voices sounded clean and natural. On their end, callers reported almost no background noise and said our voice was very clear and sharp as we would not be on a cell phone. The only downside was the kit, which they said made us sound tough. Strangely, she said the pitch of our voice was lower when on speakerphone.

We enjoyed the good EV-DO coverage to the BlackBerry Style.  We downloaded a 1MB App for BlackBerry World App in a minute. We experienced only a few seconds of buffering time with YouTube videos as well. Even if the  Style has only a 624MHz processor, we had no performance problems when switching or launching applications. The BlackBerry Style, an assessment battery life of 4.5 hours of talk time and 10.5 days of standby time.

BlackBerry Pearl 8130 Sprint Phone Review

October 29th, 2010

Luckily, Sprint customers do not have to sit back, seething jealousy, since the carrier offers its own version of the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130. For the most part it is largely similar to the Verizon model, except that it comes in the stylish amethyst color and supports Sprint mobile entertainment services, including Sprint Music Store and Sprint TV. The slim smartphone also has the added capabilities of built-in GPS, 3G support, video recording capabilities.

Design

Thankfully, the BlackBerry 8130 is still a slim profile, measuring a slight 4.2 inches long and 1.9 inches wide and 0.5 inches deep and weighs 3.4 ounces. You will have no problem slipping the handset in his pocket, and it feels comfortable and natural to hold during phone calls. Of the two colors available, Sprint offers the amethyst version of the Pearl (Verizon offers the silver model), and we are very satisfied with the color taken. It is a blue-purple hue deepish, so guys, you do not have to worry about, “girly”.

Front and center, you have a 2.25-inch non-touch screen displays 65,536 colors at a 260×240 pixel resolution. Text and images look vivid and sharp features, and the display of a light-sensing technology that will automatically backlight depending on the environment (for example, it is brighter in darker rooms). You can customize different fonts as well as the Home screen to your liking with various themes, wallpapers, and menu templates. It is also a small LED in the upper right corner of the Pearl, that different colors for different status alerts, such as new messages, battery status and illuminated so on.

Below the display you will find the same navigation array and SureType keyboard of past BlackBerry Pearls. You get Talk and End keys, a shortcut to the main menu page, a back button, and, of course, the pearl like trackball navigator that started the whole Pearl revolution. All controls are easy to use and you can adjust the trackball, the vertical and horizontal sensitivity under Options> Screen Keyboard. all welcome additions – the main differences between the Pearl 8130 and the original GSM version are found on the side controls. On the left side of the spine, you are now a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, so you plug in decent headphones, and the microSD expansion slot has been relocated behind the battery on the outside of the phone for easy access. There is also a mini-USB port and a customizable quick-launch button on the left side, while there is another convenience key and the volume rocker on the right. The top of the device has a mute button and the camera lens, flash and self-portrait mirror are located on the back. Sprint packages the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 with an AC adapter, USB cable, a wired headset and a soft carrying case.

Features

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 is more than just the fact that it’s the first CDMA Pearl remarkable. It’s also offer the first device from RIM to video-recording capabilities and the first pearl to forget about built-in GPS, not the EV-DO support and improved Web browser. But first things first: Let’s discuss the phone capabilities. Voice features on the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 include a speakerphone, voice dialing and commands, conference calling, SMS and MMS messaging and call audio enhancement, which lets the bass or treble of sound. The address book is limited only by available memory (64MB flash), and each entry can hold up to eight numbers, work and home-mails, e-mail and Web addresses, companies, and notes. For caller ID purposes, you can assign a photo to a contact as well a group category – business or pleasure – or polyphonic ringtones 45. The Pearl also supports MP3 and MIDI ring tones.

Unlike the 3G-deprived GSM Pearls, the Pearl 8130 works on Sprint’s EV-DO network, enabling data speeds of around 300kbps to 600kbps, although it could possibly take 2.4Mbps. This means you should have a faster Internet browsing experience and it should be even more fun thanks to the improved browser. Compared with Windows Mobile, Symbian or Palm devices, has the BlackBerry Web browser always kludgy and laborious for viewing sites, it requires a lot of up and down with the trackball or scroll wheel. But now you get a screen that you can move the cursor in any direction and on each side of the page where you can click a link. In addition, there is a page view option that allows you to easily zoom in on part of the page. It is definitely a big improvement, and the buoyancy of the EV-DO speeds is sent from heaven.

As for the built-in media player, you can create playlists as “folders” and shuffle and repeat songs in a specific folder. It also displays song title, artist and album cover if available. It also supports MP3, WMA, AAC, AAC +, e/AAC +, AMR-NB, and MIDI music files and MPEG4, WMV, H.263 and video clips. Plus, in video mode you are given the opportunity, full screen, replay, and repeat.

For still images, there’s a 5x zoom and flash as well as three picture sizes and three quality options. You also get the white balance and several color effects you can add the photo. Performance

We tested the dual-band (CDMA 850 /1900; EV-DO) RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 was satisfactory in San Francisco with Sprint service and quality. For the most part we enjoyed clear sound and plenty of volume, but voices sounded a bit dull, but not enough to prevent us from carrying on conversations or interacting with our bank’s automated voice response system. Our friends had no major complaints, and we do not have any dropped calls during our test phase. Speakerphone quality was acceptable with good volume. We had no problems pairing the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 Headphones Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset or the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active.

General performance was responsive. There were no significant delays as we opened and worked in various applications. Surfing the web was great, thanks to the increase of the 3G speeds and download songs from the Sprint Music Store is a matter of seconds. We were very impressed with the sound quality of the Pearl. Compared with other smartphones we’ve tested, songs sounded rich and full through the device through the speakers. Sorry, we did not enjoy similar results with video playback. The picture quality was grainy, and sometimes, it could be choppy with interrupted audio. Finally, we checked the GPS capabilities using Google Maps for Mobile. We were surprised that it only took the Pearl about two minutes to get a fix on our location. We entered a trip from the Marina District of San Francisco to a tour group in Bernal Heights, and although we do not necessarily agree with the calculated route, the phone ultimately guided us to our destination.

October 22nd, 2010

The BlackBerry Pearl was announced at WES 9100 3G again just a short month, and is about ready for prime time. It builds on earlier Pearl RIM families with an updated HVGA display, optical trackpad to the now-dissolved trackball to replace a new 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, and is the first BlackBerry with Wi-Fi 802.11n Host .

From the Bold 9000, I was prepared to miss the luxurious screen size, but reminded me of my time with the original Pearl 8100 fondly, mostly in reference to pocketable as it was and how fast I was with the SureType keyboard. Wi-Fi-n was a great train, and I was curious to see how much better it was used as the Wi-Fi on the vast majority of handsets in the past I.

Hardware

First of all, to say that the BlackBerry Pearl 3G are extremely well built. The different parts are very close together, and the keyboard is much tighter than I remember the old Pearl. Build quality aside, the 9100 has mad style. We will get into this a bit. First, the hard product information.

So, back to looks. The chrome accent is beautiful and dark, and not so disgusting silver than other BlackBerrys. The rubberized sidings and seamlessly integrated convenience keys (similar to the 8520 and Curve 8530) add a ton of grip and flexibility. The lines are both sharp and curvy and reminds me very much of the Xperia X10. The battery compartment takes the same single-slate style as the 8500-series BlackBerry, what are my favorite since it is the number of moving parts to fiddle with minimized. Not all moving parts are bad, but – is there a new under the battery cover, you pop out the SIM card easily without having to dig and pry to. It is much better than the hinge that most other BlackBerry devices are packing.

As beautiful as the size, it is not really so much bigger than the first bead, as here, can check the iPhone and BlackBerry 8120 in comparison. a very nice medium – it is a fair amount of weight, without too heavy was. As far as input is, the optical trackpad, although supposedly a step up from the earlier track ball, Fritze even in direct sunlight. This is almost as inconvenient as sometimes put more sand on the track ball, really. RIM two letters per key SureType keyboard has a learning curve to it, so be prepared.

Like most predictive systems, you must learn to trust the dictionary to find out what it is trying to say. There is a big subject with SureType: If you type something wrong is your word incorrectly predicted, and probably confused the word worse than if you screwed a single letter on a QWERTY keyboard. If you are comfortable with the forecast, you might want in the 9105-variant, which could have a standard number pad this function mobile phone users more comfortable with the look has. We are not sure if that will be exclusive for Europe, 9105 right now but we are so advised.

Software

You can view the entire list of new features in 5.0 see here at RIM’s Knowledge Base. In a broad sense, it has a lot of graphical improvements and is generally smooth and pleasant, but of course that depends largely on what you’re used to. BlackBerry is still a clear, no-nonsense experience, geared to help you, tasks done fast, not pretty. If you’re coming from Android, iPhone or webOS, you will probably quite unimpressed with the layout of the serious and seemingly antiquated icon menu system, but take some time to learn its nuances and efficiency.

What kind of efficiency are we talking here? Well, let’s look at the news application where people spend most of their time to search. Out of the box it only handles e-mail, but after fiddling with the options that you can get SMS messages in there. Once you start to download official RIM applications, such as Google Talk, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, your messages app is much more quickly than e-mail – it will be a hub for all your important means of communication. Most of these applications also plug in your address book so you can see information from a variety of sources, such as caller ID pictures from Facebook and GTalk status messages gathered. The media app, you can quickly and easily capture images that support in any social networks. If you do not like digging through menus for what you feel, pull up you can often get a short menu by clicking on the touchpad and it usually offers the most tasks and even emphasizes the most common initial rapid double-enable on to take care of business. See, it’s the little things.

I’ve been using BlackBerry for a while, so if someone calls the OS unintuitive, I have to agree a really hard time. I can certainly see how a lot of options can be overwhelming, but if the options that you use regularly, it is difficult to find a faster, easier way to get them to imagine. Still, if you are concerned that the BlackBerry would have experience to be complicated for you, I would be shocked if the new OS 6.0 and all its streamlined interface and shiny effect, not the concept was on the BlackBerry Pearl available 9100th It is also worth mentioning that the App-selection (and prices) for BlackBerry is far from stellar. If you are coming from the iPhone App World is definitely left wondering what you signed a new two-year contract. You probably will not reimburse you for new applications every other week. If you’re lucky, you’ll find something useful to once every few months, and even then you may need to budget your application memory depending on how desperate you are to start for new applications.

Remember that shortcuts damn life much easier, and there are some subtle, seamless things that RIM does, make your life easier when typing. For example, when typing an e-mail address, first hit space bar is in an @-sign and the second is a point. Capitals and be automatically usually, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts to the navigation easier to use – be sure to learn it early, and they are second nature to be in a very short time.

Multimedia

The Web browser is just about as ho-hum as ever, it does the job, it chokes a little less on JavaScript than before, and the trackpad feels a bit nicer to use for cursors, but I find the whole thing awkward cursor to and bulky. I wish the browser would only snap links and scroll down automatically, as the Google Mobile App handles it, maybe it will at least be an option for them in the revised browser … I’m still waiting for Flash support, so I can finally see YouTube videos from the mobile site that works is not yet any reason for me. In the meantime, there are always third party alternatives such as Bolt and Opera Mini.

Currently microSD cards out with 16 GB cap, so hard-core music fans will probably still want a separate music player, but for me, and casual listeners, 16 GB is enough. As controls to the media, I have found it a little uncomfortable. If you slide the phone in your pocket or a holster, you are most likely to push down from the top of the device so that accidental presses on one of the controls more than likely. On most other BlackBerry devices, you need only ask the Pause Play (Mute) button in the way so that the title will be skipped to press and hold the volume buttons on the side. I understand RIM be visible label their cell phones as a music-friendly, but I feel in this case they may have sacrificed too much.

The 3.2-megapixel camera with flash performs quite well, as you can see – here’s another picture in daylight. I would have liked a few more options, like to see the manual adjustment of exposure and agriculture, but as it is, much of the automatic settings you can manage your daily use. I’m itching to try the BlackBerry 9670 clamshell, if only for the 5-megapixel camera – are of course only for pixels that much. Lenses, sensors and software are equally important. One thing I am happy to continue with the right side convenience key (default for the camera) can see, press a two-level, so you can activate the auto focus without shooting. This is still a relatively new feature, but it also has Storm2.

Signal strength and battery life

Of the half dozen or so calls I made, none was, and heard everything just fine. Battery life felt a little better than the Bold 9000, but that’s probably because it loses its charge after two years of intensive use. The 9100 battery succeeded by a day of moderate use only fine, usually get a little left over for the next morning when it turned off overnight. What I was really interested but had Wi-Fi 802.11n.

This is the next class of Wi-Fi from g, and the highest we have now. In theory, n bump rates up to 600 Mbit /s, a significant jump of 54 Mbit /s, that b and g offered, on top of an increase in range. Unfortunately, in my tests with the 9000 and 9100 side by side, I found zero difference at all. In some cases, the Bold had even better range. I can only imagine that the battery and processor power to act as a major bottleneck, but the bottom line is that you should not really count on 802.11n, their purchase decision. It is good that RIM has to interoperability, it’s just too bad that it does not really take advantage of the higher speeds.

Conclusion

What really got me at the end of my time with the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 is 3G, it’s really the fullest possible experience BlackBerry bear little or no compromise in the interest of size. The reduced screen size, if a necessary evil, is offset by the convenience and portability of a slimmer handset. The SureType keyboard takes training, and will not feel like it is worth it for the first few weeks, but over time you can type as fast as on a standard QWERTY keyboard. I did not quite get back in my best speeds again, and still stumbled on irregular words and typos, but I only had less than a week to play with him.

One of the most obvious upgrade to the previous Curve phones is in the naming of the new device is indicated, and this is the start of 3G data technology on the new Curve 9300. This is a real bonus for many BlackBerry users, and the lack of 3G was really hurt competitiveness BlackBerry in the smartphone market, as 3G is widespread, many budget phones in those days. Design wise the new 3G-curve, like many other Blackberry phones before. The handset has a 2.4 inch TFT display and supports up to 65,000 colors and a QVGA pixel resolution. In the main screen are the familiar BlackBerry menu key and menu access, flanking both sides of the increasingly popular optical trackpad. The move to trackpad has removed one of the main weaknesses of previous BlackBerry handsets, the old trackball, which are likely to stop working over a period of time as it was accumulated by the fingers of dirt and grease. Under the main display shows a full, four rows QWERTY keyboard, and although the keys may be small and difficult to use, the buttons so that it be comfortable for most hand sizes should be designed.

The new BlackBerry 9300 is to get the latest BlackBerry OS pre-installed OS 6.0, an enhanced user experience features and delivers a really smooth surface, and the latest version of the BlackBerry web browser, the web pages does it better than before; and really use the improved data speeds available.

BlackBerry handsets have always been able media devices, and the Curve 9300 is not stingy in this department, support for a wide range of media formats for music and video, including MP3, eAAC +, WAV, FLAC, MP4, H .263, and H.264. The handset comes with a set of dedicated music keys, and there is a 3.5 mm audio jack for use with a third party headset, plus the unit features Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, with a stereo Bluetooth headset the phone can use. A camera is on the phone, nothing special is to be noted however, just a standard point n shoot 2.0 megapixel camera with video recording option mentioned.

The new BlackBerry will be available in black and red color choice at first, although given the recent popularity of the white BlackBerry phones, I am not against a white version of 9300, the betting in the near future would. Social networking is an important part of a mobile device, and with native applications for both Twitter and Facebook, the BlackBerry is setup good for keeping in touch with your friends on the road. The handset is built has a complete GPS receiver, and the offering aGPS support that will allow your tweets to your site tag if you want, and use services such as Four Square and Gowalla which may emit updates based on your current position.
